Before You Buy a Backpack.......

There are three different packs for exploring the wilderness. There is the daypack used when you plan on no more than one day in the wilderness. The other two packs are the external frame backpack and the internal frame backpack. Each come in varying sizes. These can be weekend packs up to weeklong packs depending on the size. But which backpack? If you're hiking in mild terrain most of the time, consider an external frame backpack. It can carry a heavy load comfortably and you can attach things to the frame. However, if you get into rough terrain and lots of trees then the load may become unstable or catch a tree limb. If you like hiking rough terrain then consider an internal frame backpack. They carry the load closer to your back so that you can hike through heavily forested areas more easily and not get hung up on branches. Also, the load will not shift when hiking steep areas. One additional note. Some Internal frame Backpacks have a detachable fanny pack which you can use for day hiking.
