Sleeping Bags

There are two styles of Sleeping Bags. The old conventional rectangle bag and the mummy bags. For your backpacking experience you will not hear too much said about rectangle bags. They are usually good only for summer use and because they are a little heavier they are not the choice for backpacking. However, if you like the room and don't mind the extra weight, you may want to try the rectangle bag with the mummy hood which will help keep in the heat yet have space to move around. But most backpackers prefer the mummy bag. The mummy bag comes in basically two fills. Either the down fill or the synthetic fill. This is the list of advantages for each fill:

        Cheaper:  Synthetic Bag
  Weighs Less:  Down Bag
  Lasts Longer:  Down Bag
 Dries Quicker:  Synthetic Bag

Although the synthetic bag is cheaper, it typically has a life span of 4 years. The down bag has a life span of about 12 years. The Down bag is hard to dry if wet but the synthetic bag will dry very easily. To learn more about sleeping bags read Choosing a Sleeping Bag.

Below is a list of companies that have a wide selection of sleeping bags. Pay particular attention to the size of the bag. You don't want one too small which you probably would find uncomfortable, and not one too large leaving a lot of dead space to heat. Find the right size to fit you.
