Navigation Gear

There is nothing like getting back to basics, walking through the forest listening to the birds singing, or sitting on a hillside overlooking a lake full of trout jumping, or looking up at a mountain peak all covered with snow. This is Gods Country. But listen up. This joy you fill will be taken away when you realize that you have lost your bearings. Most hikers usually have a compass when hiking in an unfamiliar  wilderness. But what do you do when you get lost and did not bring your compass? Learn how to navigate without a compass. But if you did bring your compass here are a few tips about using your compass.  If you have a topographical map, learn how to use your compass with your map. How about a GPS receiver? This is a great device that with the proper knowledge will guarantee that you will not get lost, unless the batteries go dead and you forgot  to bring a spare set of batteries or maybe something goes bad in the receiver and it quits working. Here is what one expert says about a GPS and the pros and cons. Although a GPS is a complicated piece of hardware it doesn't hurt to bring one along. But getting around in the wilderness should be a simple process of using a compass and map and paying attention to your surroundings to find that stream full of trout or that lake with the mountains in the background.
